South Korean singer SIIU just released ‘Closer,‘ and it’s an enchanting R&B track. It has a classy aesthetic with a hint of funk. It’s the kind of song you’ll hear at a cafe or club. Moreover, listeners who don’t speak Korean will still resonate with the song’s emotion and vibe.
‘Closer’ in Context
‘SIIU’s second single, ‘Closer,’ continues the narrative expressed in his debut release, “Weekend.” Where ‘Weekend’ is about meeting a love interest, ‘Closer’ establishes that relationship in context and dives deeper into it. This concept is reflected in the way each song sounds. ‘Weekend’ is bouncy, upbeat, and energetic like the excitement found with new love. ‘Closer,’ on the other hand, is smoother, slower, and warmer, more akin to intimacy found in seasoned relationships.
SIIU gave us this quote when asked about the making of ‘Closer ‘:
“With this song, I wanted to continue the story I began with my debut single, ‘Weekend.’ It explores the next chapter between two people, capturing a more private and intimate moment through my vocals, groove, and lyrics. I wanted to express the emotions and atmosphere of being alone with someone special, Creating a smooth and intimate R&B experience that feels like a natural continuation of the story.”
‘Closer’ the Song
The song opens with an energetic drum fill before easing into soothing keys, soft guitar chords, and a warm thumping bass. A simple 2/4 or 2-step drum pattern keeps the song cruising at around a smooth 90 BPM, providing a chill, dance vibe. These elements play for about 14 seconds, setting the mood. Suddenly, the instruments stop for a moment, opening up for SIIU to enter with warm yet confident vocals.
SIIU’s vocals sit comfortably in the baritone range throughout this track. While not “demanding,” his vocals have a certain power and focus. He sings into the mic in a controlled and calm manner, perfectly capturing intimacy. His vocals are enhanced by the track’s warm, comforting groove.
The singing style changes as the song seamlessly shifts into the pre-chorus or channel. SIIU sings the lyrics in short bursts, becoming more staccato-like and adding bounce to the track. Moreover, he adds backup vocals to create a hint of excitement and movement. The drums drop off later in the second part of the build, providing more focus on SIIU’s voice. Everything guides the listener to the chorus as a “1, 2” ad-lib count ushers the listener in.

“Magical” best describes the song’s grooving chorus. Like a spell, SIIU beckons his love interest to come closer with a swell of vocals. He also tells her to move slower, apparently to savor the moment. SIIU’s vocals swell throughout the chorus through the main line, backup vocals, and ad-libs. The drums return, joining the other instruments to create a slow-dance style vibe.
‘Closer’ then moves to the second verse and pre-chorus with little sonic variations. SIIU ends the song with freestyle vocals, urging the object of his affection to come closer. Ultimately, the song ends with a slow fade out.
Overall, ‘Closer’ is filled with intimate expressions and romance. With its smooth sounds and slightly upbeat vibes, it’s perfect for casual listening or for setting the tone for a date night. This is a must-have for any fan of Korean R&B and R&B in general.
