Coming hot off their groovy hit single, ‘The Fighter,’ Sullvn (stylized as “sullvn”) released “Rooftop‘ on May 23rd. ‘Rooftop’ is an upbeat and refreshing take on retro soul with a solid groove. This vibrant song soundtracks everything from a windows-down joyride to a swanky night at the lounge. It’s a great track for weddings, anniversaries, and family gatherings.
On That ‘Rooftop’
The song is about the powerful and all-consuming elation of a new love. Its title, “Rooftop,” is a clever metaphor for the euphoric and emotional high that new love provides. It’s the kind of high you don’t want to come down from. Moreover, it’s the type of love you want to share – 10 floors high.
Lead singer Robert “Sully” Sullivan sings to a love interest about foreseen adventures and promised good times. His enthused vocals convincingly express honest emotions. Sully’s lively performance of the lyrics energizes audiences. The high quality of ‘Rooftop’ is evidence of the concerted effort involved in its creation.
Rome Ramirez, known for his work with Sublime with Rome, Dirty Heads, Selena Gomez, and Enrique Iglesias, co-wrote and produced “Rootop” during a writing trip in Nashville. Rome and Sully found they worked well together. As such, Rome has a hand in much of sullvn’s releases for this year.
The Full-Bodied Production Behind ‘Rooftop’
“Rooftop” begins with a thrilling drum fill and starts the song with a vibrant energy. Tres “Sojourn” Hodgens provides the brilliant drumwork for the track. His dynamic rock-like drums supplement Sully’s exuberant vocals and act as a driving force for the track.
Sully’s hearty voice is the key component of the song. His voice effortlessly permeates throughout the track without overpowering the other elements. The reverb on this voice further fills and brightens the soundscape in a lively manner.
An impressive horn section kicks in early at the front of the song with the gifted Tomoka Nomura-Jarvis on the saxophone. The horns add an unmistakable funk essence and beautifully accent the song. Grammy-nominated bassist James East keeps things grounded but still lifts the track at the right places.
Guitars take on interesting roles within ‘Rooftop.’ One guitar plays funk-imbued riffs while the other electrifies the song with energetic soul sounds. Non-traditional elements make a subtle yet necessary appearance in the track. A synthesizer fills the song’s bridge with rich chords while sfx, like downshifters, add a little flair.
Every instrument and element helped to create an unmatched upbeat and full-bodied track. This song is a euphoric experience, just like the kind of love it’s about.
