Softey is a new and upcoming singer and songwriter based in New York. The young Italian-American artist released her breakout single, ‘Soulmates Slay,’ on April 30th, and it’s a certified bedroom pop bop!
Themes & Vibes
The vibe of ‘Soulmates Slay’ is best described as ‘girl-angst.’ Softey’s lyrics detail the frustrations and plight of traversing life as a young modern woman. However, the track is an encouraging girl power anthem despite containing depressed and confused undertones.
Social therapy and fellowship appear to make up the defining theme of ‘Soulmates Slay.’ Softey uses the term “soulmates” as a form of kindred spirits rather than of lovers. “Slay” is slang that essentially means “to accomplish with great success.” In the song, Softey invites other “girlies” going through similar situations (the soulmates) to join her in a “joint slay.”
Despite the bravado, Softey expresses uncertainty in the shared destiny of herself and her fellow girlies.
The Artisty within ‘Soulmates Slay’
Softey is certainly a talented singer. While she may not have the powerful pipes of Mariah Carey or Ariana Grande, she masterfully uses softer tones to create a pleasant intimacy within the track. Her voice is reassuring, inviting, and has a comfortable warmth that resonates throughout the song. In a sense, Softey’s singing in this track has a soothing ASMR quality due to her enunciation and microphone positioning.
Warm lush sustained synths saturate the background and beautifully complement Softey’s vocals. Arpeggiated plucks and a simple melody playfully bounce around the track, brightening the song for an upbeat yet calming experience.
The production of ‘Soulmates Slay’ is top-notch and has the quality of a major record label release. It’s evident that Softey’s talented producers put much effort and thought into this track. They knew when, where, and what to focus on sonically. Softey surrounded herself with gifted professionals who helped make this track as good as it is.
What’s to become of her Soulmates and She?
‘Soulmates Slay’ is surprisingly great for a debut song and it’s nothing short of impressive, to say the least. The track is an easy add for any bedroom pop fan or lover of Bille Eilish and Katy Perry.
Softey has been writing for four short years since she started in 2021. Four years isn’t a long time considering songwriting wasn’t Softey’s main focus. Although she may be uncertain about things to come, the future is certainly bright for this young artist.
Softey is a busy young woman but she makes it easy to keep up with her. She’s relatively active on social media, and posts about the music events she holds in NYC.
